About Shad Evans

Shad Evans is the co-founder of Radon Be Gone, Central Ohio’s leading radon testing and mitigation company, now a part of Protect Environmental, the largest soil gas contractor in the United States. Since founding the company in 2006 alongside Bill Dziatkowicz, Shad has helped thousands of Central Ohio homeowners, real estate professionals, and commercial property owners identify and eliminate radon risk in the buildings where they live, work, and learn.

Shad currently serves as President of the Ohio Association of Radon Professionals (OARP), the state chapter of the Indoor Environments Association (IEA, formerly AARST), and previously served as a national director of AARST. He holds NRPP certifications in both radon measurement and radon mitigation, an Ohio State Radon License (RS157), and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Hazardous Materials from the University of Findlay.

How Shad Became a Radon Professional

Shad’s career didn’t start in radon. After earning his degree at the University of Findlay, he spent years in the environmental consulting industry, then transitioned into independent home inspection. It was during that work that radon stopped being a line item on a report and started being a question that genuinely bothered him.

The more homes he inspected, the more he realized that the single biggest threat to the people inside those homes wasn’t structural, electrical, or mechanical. It was a colorless, odorless gas seeping up from the soil beneath their foundations — and almost no one was being told about it in a way that led to action. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the leading cause among non-smokers, responsible for an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year, according to the EPA.

In 2006, Shad partnered with Bill Dziatkowicz to launch Radon Be Gone with a single, focused mission: eliminate radon’s impact on the lives of Central Ohio families. Together they bring more than 36 combined years of radon industry experience.

When I learned that radon was the second leading cause of lung cancer, I realized I’d been inspecting homes without checking for the thing most likely to hurt the people living inside them. That changed the entire direction of my career. Every house in Central Ohio sits on geology that makes this region one of the highest-risk radon zones in the country. Testing isn’t optional here. It’s the difference between knowing and guessing.

A Note on Radon Awareness in Central Ohio

Central Ohio’s radon problem has received increasing public attention in recent years. The Columbus Dispatch’s “Invisible Killer” investigation, published in November 2025, found that the region is “ground zero for radon” in the United States, with Newark’s 43055 ZIP code recording the highest residential concentration in the country, according to a 2025 Harvard University study. The series prompted the Columbus Metropolitan Library to launch a radon monitor borrowing program across 23 branches, and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine publicly called on schools to begin testing for the gas.

Shad and the Radon Be Gone team have served Central Ohio homeowners through this surge in awareness with the same approach they’ve used since 2006: methodical diagnosis first, custom-engineered solutions second, and post-installation verification testing on every job.
